Manatees Return Home

Blue Spring State Park is one of the most popular places in all Florida to see wintering manatees, which gather in the 72-degree waters between November and March.

Every January a two-day festival is held to celebrate the manatees' return. In 2006, the dates are Saturday and Sunday, January 28 and 29. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Highlights include conservation displays, more than 100 arts and crafts booths, a children's play area with face painting and kid's rides.

Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children 4 to 10. Kids under 4 are free. Avoid parking problems by taking a free Park-n-Ride from West Volusia Regional Shopping Center to the festival at Valentine Park.

You can also take a free ride from the festival to Blue Spring Park to see the manatees.

Proceeds from the festival go to the Blue Spring State Park "Wish List," local educational scholarships and area organizations.

Directions:  The festival is held at Valentine Park on West French Avenue, off US 17-92, in Orange City. Take exit 54 on I-4 and follow signs to Blue Spring State Park. Call 386-775-9224 for more information.
