Nesting loggerhead turtle depositing eggs
The Hobe Sound Nature Center is a cooperating association with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is located at the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. Turtle walks to view nesting turtles are scheduled Tuesday, Thursday or Friday nights in June and July. Walks are usually over by midnight but have been known to last until 1 a.m.
Reservations begin April 1. Reservations are taken until all the spaces are filled, which usually takes several weeks. Thirty people are allowed to sign up for each walk, with no minimum age restrictions. Waiting lists are also taken in case of last-minute cancellations. Participants assemble in the Center's classroom at the Hobe Sound NWR. The center opens at 8:30 p.m. and an orientation/presentation begins at 9.m. After the presentation, participants drive the 5 minutes from the Refuge to Hobe Sound Public Beach. Scouts ago ahead of the group to locate a turtle along a stretch of beach that is approximately one mile in length. The actual walk to the turtle is normally less than a half-mile. You wait in the relative luxury of a covered pavilion with restrooms and drinking fountain until the scouts locate a turtle. Donations are requested. Contact
