Manatees Wintering in
Blue Spring State Park

Cold weather is one the greatest dangers manatees face. In spite of their blubbery appearance, manatees do not have a thick layer of fat to insulated them from the cold.

Manatees suffering prolonged exposure to water less than 59 degrees often die. To escape cold weather, manatees often seek out fresh water springs like Blue Spring State Park where the water remains 73 degrees throughout the year.

Several hundred manatees usually winter in Blue Spring State Park, located not far from Orlando.
