Florida
residents can count birds without ever having to leave
their family room or back porch.
The Audubon Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs)have been joined
by another program, known as Project FeederWatch,
which is sponsored by the Cornell (University) Lab of Ornithology in
Ithaca, NY.
This endeavor differs from the CBCs in that all counts are done by observing
bird feeders, and many of counts are done as a classroom project.
Project FeederWatch has backyard bird watchers in all
50 states and 12 Canadian provinces and territories and often includes
many teachers and their classes.
The
program is an ideal way to interest youngsters in he
study, appreciation and conservation of birds, attitudes too often lacking
in our ever-urbanizing society.
The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology charges $15 to
join Project FeederWatch, but you also end up with lots of goodies:
data forms, complete instructions, the project newsletter and a bird
calendar (plus special materials for teachers).
U.S. Citizens can join at http://birds.cornell.edu/pfw/signup.html

citizens join at
