                         Nesting loggerhead sea turtle


Archie Carr NWR may be the best place in all of Florida to view a nesting loggerhead sea turtle. Twenty-five percent of all loggerhead turtle and 35% of all green turtle nests in the United States occur in the 20 mile section of coastline from Melbourne Beach to Wabasso Beach.

Archie Carr NWR the most important nesting area for loggerhead turtles in the western hemisphere and the second most important nesting beach in the world. As many as 1,000 nests per mile have been recorded. That totals 15,000 to 20,000 nests each season.

For reservations for guided turtle walks, call Sebastian Inlet State Park at 321/984-4852. Reservations for June are taken on May 15 only, starting at 8AM. Reservations for July are taken on June 15 only, starting at 8AM. Sea turtle walks are conduction in June and July only.

Be able to walk up to a mile on the beach and the entire program lasts an average of 3 hours. Because of the potentially long walk, very young children, the elderly or disabled are discouraged from participating.

Flashlights, flash photography and filming are not permitted. Bug spray for mosquitoes and water are essential items to carry.
