Florida Power & Light Plant is a nationally recognized leader in helping protect plants and wildlife, particularly manatees and sea turtles.

FPL conducts turtle walks to view nesting loggerhead turtles on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings at the FPL St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant on Hutchinson Island.

Reservations are made by calling beginning May 1. But don't try calling only on that date.

Walks begin at 9 p.m. with an orientation and education program.

Activities are usually ended by midnight but may last longer if the turtle under observation hasn't completed her nesting.

Walks are limited to 50 people, who wait in the auditorium until scouts find a nesting loggerhead. Then everyone is taken by truck to the nearest access gate, so walks are brief.

A certain number of spaces are reserved on each walk for guests staying at the three hotels on South Hutchinson Island.

Contact information: Call 800/334-5483 (Florida only). This phone is not answered until reservations for the turtle walk begin. Check out the brief information available on the FPL website. It says reservations are not taken until the end of May, which an FPL spokesman told me was incorrect.
