Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Nesting Eye "Tears"

Note this nesting loggerhead sea turtle's eye, which has a tear and tear tracks running into the sand. At one time it was believed these tears resulted from pain or the exertion of the egg laying process. Not so.

Sea turtles shed such tears continuously in order to rid their bodies of excess salts. The glands responsible for these salty secretions are located near the eyes.
