Manatee Holds Water Hyacinth
As It Feeds

Scientists say the closest modern relative to the Florida manatee is the elephant. Once a land animal, too, the aquatic manatee's manatee front legs have transformed into a pair of slippers.

The tips of the front flippers (obscured in this photo) contain three to four vestigial fingernails said to look remarkably like that of an elephant.

Furthermore, the elephant is a herbivore like the manatee and the two share a similar tooth structure.
