Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Excavating Nest

Excavating the body pit. A sea turtle uses only the hind legs to dig the egg chamber.

If a sea turtle nesting late in the season happens to choose a site close to where other eggs are already incubating, it thinks nothing of disturbing or wrecking the earlier "clutch" as it digs a fresh pit.

Seagulls and other predators will feed on the excavated sea turtle eggs, effectively destroying the first nest.
